As the cold weather comes, fall sports ended and the winter sports are starting up. During the week of Nov. 12, students signed up for basketball, track, cheerleading, hockey, and/or wrestling.

These sports meetings were held after school in different classrooms throughout the school. Student-athletes met their coaches to get information about the sport and learn what the schedule will be like.

Tonight, boys basketball is at 6 p.m. away at Blue Hills Regional Technical School. Tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 14, hockey is home at the Rockland Rink at 7:40 p.m., while wrestling is also tomorrow at 9 a.m. in Scituate. Winter track’s first meet will be Monday at 6 p.m. in Roxbury at the Reggie Lewis Center, and winter cheer also begins.

One of Abington’s winter sports that had a nice run last year was the boys’ basketball team. It made it all the way to state championship at Worcester Polytechnic Institution (WPI).

The Wave had a lot of basketball players that had a strong impact on last year ‘s season. Players such as seniors Will Klein, Colby Augusta, Cam Curney, as well as juniors Matty Maguire and Derek Nuttall are returning.

Senior Colby Augusta was asked about how their team will be capitalizing on their previous season’s success. “We’ve been working hard in the off-season and know that it’s a brand new season, so we need to bring the same intensity and work ethic,” Augusta said.

Another winter sport that had a good season last year is hockey. They have added a new face to the coaching staff. His name is Brian Woodford. The team hopes to have a better season than they had last year.

Junior John Polito was asked how he thinks the season will go with the new coach on the team. “We have high hopes for adding our new coach to our team. He a great coach and I think we will do good this season.” 

All winter play until early February 2019. Best of luck to the winter teams.
