This year, the Student Athletic Advisory Committee(SAAC) has decided to create spotlights to honor Abington High School’s student athletes. In light of the current pandemic, it is more important than ever to recognize their efforts and talents.

Highlighted on the second day of these spotlights are three South Shore League All Stars from the Girls Cross Country Team. The team became South Shore League Champions this year, their first title since 1979. The three All Stars that helped lead the team to success are freshman Selena Wood, junior Jackie Earner, and junior Mia Scarpelli.

Selena Wood

The first South Shore League All-Star for the girls’ XC team is freshman Selena Wood. Selena has been participating in the sport for three years, throughout middle school, and now high school. Selena placed 7th in the league meet at Middleboro and she was given the title of the top freshman in the league. She was also the top-scoring girl on the XC team. Her favorite memory from the season is dancing to their favorite songs every race with the team and spending time with everyone during practices and runs. Selena chose the sport because she knew no matter what she was going to have a great time, even if she was the only freshman. The team had a great bond, nobody was ever judgmental, and they all felt comfortable talking about almost anything. She says, “cross country is my best sport.”

Jackie Earner

The next South Shore League All-Star for the girls’ XC team is junior Jackie Earner. She has been participating in the sport for seven years and continues to do so. To list a few of her many accomplishments, Jackie has placed 2nd and 3rd at the Twilight JV Meets, 15th and 11th at States, and has been selected as an All-Scholastic, League All-Star, and Team MVP many times. With going to All-States as a freshman, she truly committed to the sport from the beginning. Her favorite memory is dancing to Low by T-Pain and winning leagues. Jackie says that chose to go into XC because “the environment/people are always so supportive and I love it!”

Mia Scarpelli

The final South Shore League All-Star for the girls XC team is junior Mia Scarpelli. She has been participating in the sport for two years and continues to do so. Mia has accomplished so much but she says that her greatest accomplishment is winning leagues alongside her team. Her favorite memory was the team itself. She says, “although this year was hard with having to quarantine, our team overcame the obstacles and bonded so well!” Mia chose the sport because she loves the feeling of crossing the finish line and says, “it’s the most rewarding thing!”
