Winter Athlete Spotlights: Week Three

Recognizing Two Juniors with Outstanding Athletic Talents

Junior Girls Basketball player Olivia Maguire is highlighted as a Winter Sports Athlete of the Week.

Abington High School’s Student Athletic Advisory Committee(SAAC) has decided to honor two winter athletes during each week of the 2020-2021 winter season. SAAC will recognize one male and one female athlete per week, from the Girls Basketball, Boys Basketball, and Hockey teams. Highlighted on the third week of these spotlights are Olivia Maguire and Michael Pineau.

Olivia Maguire

This week’s female spotlight is on Girls Varsity Basketball player Olivia Maguire. Maguire, number 14, is a junior and plays forward on the court. She has been playing basketball since second grade, with her favorite memory being “post-game locker room celebrations before Covid.” When asked why she chose this sport, Maguire says, “I chose to play basketball because it seemed like a fun sport to play with my friends, but I continue to play because it teaches you how to work hard and be a good teammate.” As for how she got to where she is today, she thanks her family, teammates, and coaches for everything from driving her to practices and games to supporting and pushing her to be the best basketball player she can be. Along with basketball, Maguire plays lacrosse and cheerleading for the Green Wave. Her favorite class is math, and her favorite teacher is Mrs. Maddalena because she loved her class and how she ran it. Maguire’s favorite sports to watch are football and basketball, and when asked about her favorite high school memory she highlighted “spending every day with my friends and getting Marylous after school.” We can’t wait to see what the future brings Olivia Maguire!

Michael Pineau

Junior hockey phenom Michael Pineau has been awarded this week’s male Athlete of the Week honor. The right winger has tallied 15 points in five games, putting three pucks in the net and dishing out a whopping 12 assists. Number nine for the Wave has been playing hockey for 12 years, with the three most recent on the Abington squad. One of Pineau’s favorite memories playing hockey was taking a trip to Ottawa with his club team for a tournament and coming back home with the tournament title. Pineau is trying to help carry similar success to the Green Wave this season. With only one loss thus far, Pineau is at the forefront of a team looking to make a deep run in the South Shore League Tournament. After the hockey season, he will lace up the cleats and hit the diamond as he also plays for the baseball team at Abington High. Pineau credits all his success to his parents as he claims they pushed him to always do his best. With his senior campaign still to be played after this year, Pineau has the making to continue his success and looks to take the Green Wave back to the tournament after a playoff push last season.
