Start your summer off by taking a road trip to one of these exciting places. Only a four hour drive to the greatest city in the world! In New York, there are so many fun things to do and breathtaking sights to see. Some of the top travel destinations include the following:
Times Square
In Times Square, people get to see the artistic side of New York. There are many artists, singers, and street performers. There are also advertisements on billboards and many bright colored LED lights. If you like to shop, make sure you stop by at least one of the huge stores New York has to offer. One suggestion is M&M’S World, located at 1600 Broadway. This store carries things like pajamas, hoodies, and T-shirts with the M&M logo. And of course, M&Ms. There are dispensers of different colored M&Ms that you can fill a container with. There is also a wonderful place for ice cream called Ice and Vice, located at 221 E Broadway.
Empire State Building
Another must do in New York is ascending the Empire State Building. It is a huge tourist attraction and for good reason. It stands at an incredible 102 stories. The elevator is an adventure with so many buttons and a beautiful marble floor. At the top, you can go outside. There is a big view of the city. At dusk, there are many buildings visible with bright lights. You can feel a little nervous being so far up, but there are metal bars protecting you from falling off.
Broadway
In New York, you can see many Broadway shows including “Once on This Island,” which the music and art students from AHS recently saw. This is a show about a peasant girl, Ti Moune, who falls in love with a member of royalty when he crashes his car on her side of the island. They cannot be together because they come from different social classes, but they will still try. The plot in some ways parallels Romeo and Juliet.
Another Broadway musical is “Come from Away.” In contrast to “Once on This Island” the stage is set up traditionally. A huge difference of this show compared to other soundtracks is that the songs roll in to each other. In other words, there is not a usual break between songs and they were connected. This concept gives the show a faster pace and a sense of urgency. The show is based on a true story of people who were flying on Sep 11, 2001 and then 38 planes were commanded to land in the small town of Gander, Newfoundland in Canada. The citizens of Gander go above and beyond, getting commodities and food to make sure these people who are stranded have a comfortable stay. The citizens of Gander stay up all night to care for the traumatized people. The musical is inspiring.
Cooperstown
Outside of the City, there are many smaller towns to go to, including Cooperstown, which is home to The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. This museum is huge and includes facts about various major league baseball players such as Babe Ruth, Jackie Robinson, and Roberto Clemente. Clemente stood out as more than a celebrity. He was a generous man too. Clemente died in a tragic plane crash on his way to deliver supplies to survivors of an earthquake in Nicaragua on New Year’s Eve in 1972. The next year he was elected to the national baseball hall of fame. The Plaque Gallery is the most memorable part of the museum and is worth visiting more than once. It has every member of the Baseball Hall of Fame hanging on plaques and a little blurb about who they are. It is really interesting finding specific players that you know, including finding your favorite. They also have jerseys and helmets that the players wore in games. For baseball lovers, this is the place for you.
New York is a diverse place that has something for everyone to love.
