Green Wave Takes the Title
Win over Northbridge at rainy Gillette caps off championship season
The Green Wave football teams finished their 12-1 season on December 6 with a MIAA Division V Super Bowl win over the Northbridge Rams at Gillette Stadium. The Northbridge Rams were 12-0 before losing 36-6 in the Super Bowl. The Green Wave’s defense held the Rams, who averaged 39 points per game, to just one touchdown on the last play of the game. They also intercepted two passes and sacked Northbridge’s quarterback five times. Shawn Donovan rushed for 139 yards and three touchdowns; Aidan Cawley scored a touchdown on a punt return, and QB Bryan Dwyer also ran the ball in for a touchdown.
The AHS football team has had a great year. Abington defeated Cardinal Spellman, Sandwich, Randolph, Kearsarge N.H., Norwell, Rockland, East Bridgewater, Dover-Sherborn, Bishop Fenwick, and Whitman-Hanson before beating Northbridge in the Super Bowl. They beat Cardinal Spellman in both the regular season and playoffs and beat their rival Rockland 27-7. Abington defeated Whitman-Hanson in the 104th Thanksgiving Day game between the two teams. The Green Wave also defeated East Bridgewater in the playoffs after losing to them in the regular season and gave Bishop Fenwick, last year’s Super Bowl champions, their first loss in two seasons.
The team’s great year was thanks in no small part to their 13 seniors: Brian O’Donovan, Luca Cerasani, John Kearns, Sam Malafronte, Rob Toomey, Ray Emery, Josh Riordan, James Landers, Bryan Dwyer, Aidan Cawley, George Cellini, Dexter Chevallier, and Cole Jansen; as well as junior running backs Shawn Donovan and Donnel Leon. This was Abington’s fourth Super Bowl victory; they also won in 2002, 2005, and 2012.
