Most likely, you’ve heard of the fairytale The Princess and the Pea. Abington High School drama is presenting a musical take on the classic, Once Upon a Mattress. The opening night is TONIGHT, Thursday, March 13th. There will be two additional shows on Friday the 14th and Saturday the 15th. The Thursday and Friday shows will be at 7:00 pm in the auditorium. Saturday’s performance will be at 2:00 pm.  

The annual spring musical is always anxiously awaited by the community. The drama department is known for putting on impressive performances with a talented cast of students. This year, Abington will be putting on a production of Once Upon a Mattress. You should expect an entertaining show with lots of adult humor, energetic songs, and crazy love stories. When asked about the plot, cast member Lucy Fish said, “The play is about a small kingdom ruled by a talkative queen and a mute king. Their son is trying to find a princess to marry, but the queen wants to remain queen until she dies. When the princesses arrive at the castle hoping to wed the prince, the queen makes up tests that are impossible to pass. This will continue for the first 12 princesses, until the 13th princess arrives. The castle staff are fed up with the queen and decide to help this princess cheat so she can pass the test.” 

The cast is immensely talented, featuring many strong singers and skillful actors. They have been working hard for months to put on the show. “There is so much work. There are lots of hours working and late nights, but it’s so fun when we put it all together,” says cast member Addie Coletti. “We’ve put so many hours—I’m talking five hours a day—and the fact that we’ve been able to put on such an amazing show in just 2 months makes all the hours worth it. I’m so proud of the whole cast.”
