Ms. Victoria Tansey joined the Academic Support department at Abington High School this year. She has been a teacher for five years.

In May of 2020, Tansey received a Master’s degree in Special Education from Boston University. Her bachelor’s degree is in History and Secondary Education from Roger Williams University.

Although she grew up in Peabody, she moved to the South Shore when offered the job at Abington.

Tansey said her favorite thing so far about working at Abington High is getting to know the students and that she really likes the community. “I love working with kids and always wanted to work in special education,” she said. And the staff is “very friendly and helpful.”

Making a connection with the students is important to Tansey, who said, it’s easier to help them if she can “see where they’re coming from” and that she would rather have a “person-to-person conversation” when she works with students.

Teaching and learning during Covid-19 is difficult. Tansey “enjoys being in the classroom instead of being fully remote.”  She said that one of the hardest things about teaching during the pandemic is “it’s tough making connections with kids because everything is so inconsistent. In order for students to be successful there needs to be routine, and they have to feel comfortable in the classroom.”

To motivate students, Tansey said she, “reminds them of their goal and what they really want to do in their life and to see the bigger picture.”

In her spare time, Tansey enjoys “exploring the South Shore with my dog Cooper and hiking.” She looks forward to when Covid-19 ends and she can go out to eat and enjoy her favorite food, Mexican.
