Hockey Boys Make the Tournament

Abington High’s hockey team earns a playoff spot with a late win

This year marks the third season the Abington High School hockey team stands on their own, no longer combined with East Bridgewater as the EAB team. Last year’s seniors made up the very powerful first line, leaving the Green Wave in a knot this season. Two senior captains, Joe Marella and Jake Quinlan have been carrying the team on their back to lead them to success. Sean Linehan and Chris Cook also provide senior leadership. Junior Captain Matt Curran also provides experience and scoring ability up front. Veteran Coach Brian Smith is behind the bench.  “The season is going well, we have a positive record and I hope we maintain that,” said Joe Marella.

On the rise this year are sophomore Anthony Chiavaroli and freshman Kevin O’Neil. They are stepping up this year to help the team. Last year’s backup goalie Mike Morse is now the team’s starting goalie and has been playing well.  This year the team faces new challenges like playing home and away against Quincy who has the reputation of being a well coached and talented team. The boys also play the highly competitive South Shore League; so every game is tough. So far the team has pulled together to beat tough competition like Cohasset, Plymouth North and Mashpee. And, with a late season win over Lowell, the team caps off the season by making the tournament.
