“Views” from Drake

The hype lives on

May 16, 2016

Drake is back with another highly anticipated album drop with “Views.” When he originally announced the name and concept back in 2014, the album was to be called “Views from the 6.” The 6 refers to his hometown of Toronto (and its six cities or sections) which has become a hub for hip-hop culture. This can be seen in the city’s basketball team, the Toronto Raptors, whose brand has shifted with Drake’s influence and unofficial title as “Global Ambassador.” Every season they host a “Drake Night” dedicated to his success. At that game, the players wear black and gold jerseys, which just so happens to be the colors of Drake’s record label, OVO Sound.

Musically, Drake has remained dominant, becoming a household name due to his appeal, not only to hip-hop, but also the pop scene. His mix-tape “If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late,”(2015) featured hip-hop/rap hits like “Energy” and “Know Yourself.” However, he’s made pop hits like “Hotline Bling,” and is featured in “Work” by Rihanna. He has earned a reputation in both genres and continues to deliver with “Views.”

In an interview with Zane Lowe on OVO Sound Radio on apple Music, on the eve of the album release, Drake said the concept behind the album is to “take people through the seasons (of Toronto),” going from the cold winter, to its hot and scorching summer, and then back to winter. The album takes off with the slower and softer songs starting with “U With Me?” and “Keep the Family Close,” to more up beat songs like “With You” and “Childs Play.” “Views” still features hip-hop and rap bangers with “Hype” and “Pop Style,” while still having pop hits like “One Dance” and “Controlla.” Overall the album definitely lives up to its expectations with a taste appealing to all genres. Drake has also made it known that his year doesn’t end with this release. He plans to release new music during his upcoming “Summer Sixteen” tour with Future. Living up to the “Hype,” “Views” truly is a classic.
