Boys Baseball: Team Effort (2014)

Baseball team a home run

Just before the Green Wave baseball team played faced Millis in the MIAA tournament, we had the opportunity to sit down with junior James Landers. The 14-6 Green Wave had a dominant season with great things coming from everyone involved in the team’s journey. It truly was a team effort which was clear to anyone on the team or fans that attended games. Each player did their best to “pick each other up during the game, especially if someone has a tough play,” said Landers.

Coach (Perakslis) gets us ready for every game and always puts us in the best chance to win

One of the points discussed with Landers was the leadership given by veteran coach Steve Perakslis. “Coach gets us ready for every game and always puts us in the best chance to win,” said Landers. Coach Perakslis recently achieved the prestigious milestone of 200 career wins over his 13 year reign as varsity head coach, and it was easy to see the respect the players have for him. His success as a coach is great inspiration for players on both the varsity and JV level. When asked who he thinks will make a big impact going up to the varsity level from JV, Landers said he has his eye on two key players. “Leary, the sophomore, should make an impact in the outfield and Kearns, the junior, should help the team out because of his good JV pitching.” Both players excel at their positions and should undoubtedly continue to make waves on the varsity team.

Getting to the tournament has been no small task, yet as all could see the baseball team handled business with a calm, very professional demeanor. Certainly the driving factor in this beautiful season is teamwork and the mental fortitude to push on through the six losses they suffered. At times though, the Green Wave was desperate for a run or some way to gain momentum against a particularly tough team. According to Landers this spark was more often than not provided by Jake Quinlan. “Quinlan has been very consistent at the plate and always comes through with a big hit,” said Landers. A consistent player is always considered a bright spot in any offense and Quinlan fills that role perfectly. With all of the team’s strengths from coaching, to consistency, and especially attitude, our Green Wave has all the right ingredients to travel far in the tournament.
