After the Fall I and Fall II sports seasons were difficult last year because of Covid-19, the regular fall athletic season finally got back on track this year. This season was certainly a memorable one, and definitely not one short of successes for the Green Wave.

The Varsity Golf team was definitely one that had a successful season. Senior captains Ryan Tobin and Kevin Cashman guided their team into the state tournament and eventually ended the season with a 12-4 record. The 8-person team was a very young one, with 5 of its members being sophomores. Out of these five, Hunter Grafton joined senior captain Ryan Tobin as a league all-star. The team only suffered one loss on their home course, proudly defending the valley.

This year’s girls Cross Country team was led by senior veterans Mia Scarpelli and Jackie Earner. Despite the small size of their team, they had a very successful season. Two of their runners made it to states- senior captain Jackie Earner and sophomore Selena Wood. The two girls also received the title of league All Stars, which is an amazing accomplishment. Earner was also named league MVP.

Along with the girls team, boy’s Cross Country had themselves a pretty good season. The crew, led by Mike Debono, Aiden Ryan, and Colby Boyle, won two meets and visited multiple invitationals. They also attending All States, which took place in Wrentham. Captains Mike Debono and Aiden Ryan attending All States along with Max Wilkinson Enver Amboy and Owen Hagerty.

The boys varsity soccer team was another AHS athletic team that had an extremely memorable season. The team made its first tournament appearance since 2013, and not only qualified, but captured its first tourney win in eight years. When asked how it felt to win such an important game, junior captain Joseph Hajjar said, “[it] felt amazing, it topped off our season because we haven’t done it in 8 years. We cherished every moment of the game and would do anything to play it again. “The team defeated Sturgis East 1-0 in the preliminary round of the division four state tournament before being defeated by Frontier Regional in the round of 32.

When asked about what made the team so successful, the junior captain said, “Our chemistry together was amazing. We played with each other for many years, and we knew where everyone was without even looking.” This team definitely will be a memorable one in AHS history.

The Green Wave girls’ varsity soccer team ended their season on a high note with a dominant 6-2 win against Rising Tide on senior night. Junior Delaney McCann said that game in particular was one of her favorite memories of the season, “the energy was high, and the team chemistry was making plays happen.”

The group had a special bond and was a strong team both on and off the field, making the season memorable for all involved. Delaney McCann said, “I love how this specific team became a close group of best friends, on and off the field. This group truly had fun with each other, making this season one for the books.”

The Varsity Volleyball team capped off another successful season with a tournament qualification. The team went 8-10, led by captains Hannah Tirrell and Madison Carini. They made it to the first round of the MIAA division four tournament, before they were defeated by Arlington Catholic.

After only their fifth year as a program, the team qualified impressively once again for the post season. When asked about her favorite part of this team, captain Madison Carini said, “I love how we were so comfortable with each other, where we were able to be honest and help one another – making us all better players.”

The Green Wave varsity cheerleading team was another successful AHS team this season. They finished another season full of accomplishments once again this fall, placing 2nd in the South Regional Competition and 3rd place at states.

Senior captain Elizabeth Campbell said she believes, “what contributed to our success was how much we all enjoyed being together, which made us overall work better as a team.” The team was close with one another, and it showed through their successes.

The Green Wave Varsity Football team ended their season with an impressive record of 11-2. Captains Eddie Reilly, Shea McClellan, and Tommy Fanara led the team to the Division 6 Super Bowl at Gillette Stadium.

This season was a great one for the football, with it being Jim Kelliher’s, their head coach, 500th game coaching for the boys. Despite their Super Bowl loss, captain Eddie Reilly says that the team was “a group of guys that will have a special place in [his] heart forever”, however, it was “A disappointing end to one of the most resilient senior classes in the school’s history”. Between loosing players and Coach Kel getting COVID, the Green Wave overcame every obstacle and made the best out of the season. Every Friday night down at the Frolio field was memorable, the fan section filled with fun themes and the field filled with skilled players. There was never an unenjoyable game to watch when the football team was playing.

With the fall season all wrapped up, be sure to go check out some winter Green Wave action and check back with the Gazette for some game and player highlights.
