On Wednesday, Nov. 6, when the doors opened at 5:45 p.m., hundreds of cheerleaders and spectators filed into the Abington High School gym where the Abington Cheerleading team hosted the South Shore League Cheerleading competition. It began at 6 p.m.

The competition included teams from Whitman-Hanson, Randolph, Marshfield, Mansfield, Duxbury, North Quincy, Pembroke, Barnstable, Attleboro, Quincy, Rockland, East Bridgewater, Middleboro, Norwell, Hull, Cohasset, Carver, and Mashpee.

Teams were grouped into divisions, with Abington being in the Tobin Division. In the competition, each team performed a 2 minute and 30 second routine in front of a panel judges. They were then given a score based on the execution of skills, such as their stunts, tumbling, jumps, motions, and performance. After a strong routine from the Green Wave, Abington’s cheer team placed first in the Tobin league division.

I am very proud of the time and effort they have put into this season.

— Ms. Gerhart

The highest scoring teams for each division’s scores were then compared to determine the grand champions. Abington finished with the second highest overall score in the competition, while Rockland, in the Sullivan Division, won the whole competition.

South Shore League all-stars were also recognized at the competition. Abington sophomores Lindsay Augusta and Lola Revasz, junior Carolyn Doherty, and seniors Erin McDermott and Haven DiMambro were all recognized.

Ms. Gerhart, the AHS cheerleading coach, said, “As a first year coach, I have enjoyed working with these athletes everyday. I am very proud of the time and effort they have put into this season.”

Congratulations to the Abington Cheerleaders and good luck on the rest of your season.
