The Abington High School golf team had an unforgettable season. The Green Wave golf team was not so successful in the past, but that has changed this year. The big name of the AHS golf team is Colin McDonald. McDonald, a senior, transfered to Abington in his junior year from Xaverian. He has led the Wave to a 9-6-1 season in 2019. With McDonald on the golf team, they made the playoffs held in Foxboro on Oct. 21 where they finished fourth in Division III South.

McDonald’s first year coming to Abington helped the team recover from an 0-16 season the year before, to a 6-10 season the next year, 2018. McDonald’s addition to the team helped lead them to success under Coach Tim Hill.

When McDonald joined the team, it was recovering from a win-less season, but McDonald wanted to change that. McDonald had his eyes on success for the team, and wanted to put winning in the team’s blood. Last year as a junior, McDonald led the team to 6 wins, and then this year as a senior to 9 wins and a tie that led the Wave to the playoffs.

McDonald was asked what it was like going from school to school with different teams. He said, “I was going into a team [the Green Wave] that had open arms for me and accepted me, and I fit in with a great group of guys and a coach that had tons of knowledge of the game.” Other seniors on the team with McDonald are John Mueller, Johnny Hawkesworth, and Joe McCarthy.

When asked how he felt on turning AHS golf around, McDonald said, “It feels great that I could contribute to this great town and team.”

Senior caption, Joe McCarthy was asked what he thought led the golf team to be so successful. “Everyone got together in the off season and we really became a team. That hasn’t happened in the past three years that I have been here,” McCarthy said. When reflecting on his golf career at AHS, McCarthy said that although his time here has come to an end, he can’t wait to get back on the links with his buddies in the summer.

A younger leader of the team is junior Connor Buckley. Buckley shot well for the Wave. He has big footsteps to fill for next season. Buckley plans to lead next year’s team to the playoffs again and wants to take home some jewelry. There are high expectations for Buckley and from Coach Hill.

Coach Hill has a passion for golf.  He wants to make kids better and loves helping high school athletes be the best they can be.

October was a great month for the golf team. Besides McDonald representing Abington in the State Golf Tournament at Cranberry Valley on Oct. 28, on Oct. 23 the Abington golf team finished third in the South Shore League All-League match and had two South Shore League All-Stars: Buckley and McDonald. October was a great end to an already great season.
